How I spent my summer…

I know I haven’t posted in a while, so you are probably wondering what in the world I am up to! Over the summer, I was busy taking 2 summer courses – American Literature and British Literature. Lots of reading and lots of papers, but I got through it. I have also been busy working on my 2 manuscripts that will be published as picture books within the next year.

A Special Family is being illustrated by Gwen Clifford. My job as far as the illustration process is concerned is to divide my story into pages and give Gwen my ideas for what I would like on each page. Then she gets started on a sketch. For this book, she decided to use pastel colors and a soft border around each illustration, which I think will look amazing! You can read more about the story here.

Tanner Turbeyfill and the Moon Rocks will be illustrated by Josh Crawford. His full-page illustrations are breath-taking and I can’t wait for everyone to see them next spring when the book is released! I am so thankful that I’m working with a publisher who allows me input into what the illustrations will look like. A lot of times with big companies the author and illustrator might not even know each other… it is the publisher that decides the look of the book. But with Diamond DMT, I got to suggest Josh as the illustrator, and we are working together to paginate the book and brainstorm ideas for the pictures. I am loving the editing/publishing process!

As far as school is concerned, I just started my last semester at UNC Charlotte. I am taking 4 classes. British Lit 2, which I am enjoying so far… we just finished reading Beowulf. Multiculturalism in Children’s Literature is fun… I’ll get to read books like Number the Stars and A Wrinkle in Time. Contemporary American English, ironically taught by a German professor, will be easy because of my background in Speech-Language Pathology. And last but not least, Spanish for Reading Knowledge. Tengo que estudiar español para mi grado inglés. ¿Por qué? Ninguna idea.

¡Esto es todo por el momento! ¡Disfrute del resto de su verano!

  1. Anna, I am so proud of you! I spoke with Gwen the other night at church, and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about you and your stories. I can’t wait to read your creations!
